Windows 95 logo.sys Files

Ok...while the graphics load, here's the skinny...
Win95's opening and closing screens are .bmp files, renamed .sys files (Win95 is so confusing). Exit2DOS sets a couple of "flags" and replaces Win95's "logos.sys" with it's own "logos.sys" (just another .bmp graphic). You can do this yourself, if you can use a text editor or Windows "sysedit", but Exit2DOS is so handy...

If you don't want or need to go to DOS, but still want to change your screens, just change the "logo.sys" files and you'll be "good to go".

Now, heavens to Murgatroyd*, you don't have to use my graphics; they're primarily to show what you can do and something to use until you make your own.

Here's whatcha do...
First, make your graphics, any or all of the three.
They need to be 320 x 400 pixels and 256 colors.
They need to be saved in the .bmp format.
Then Windows will stretch it to 640 x 480 pixels (Win95 is so confusing), so keep in mind that your graphic will be stretched twice as wide, but just a little bit vertically.
Rename your files "logo.sys" for the opening screen, "logow.sys" for the first closing screen and "logos.sys" for the final screen.
Then go to your Windows folder.
Look for two files called "logos.sys" and "logow.sys"...rename them "logos0.sys" and "logow0.sys". This saves them, in case you want to switch back, somewhere down the road.
Then put the two files you made and named "logos.sys" and "logow.sys" (or my two files) into the Windows folder.
Then go to your "root directory", usually C:\.
Look for a file called "logo.sys". If you have installed Microsoft Plus!, you'll probably find one; otherwise you probably won't (I have no idea where the original logo.sys file is. Win95 is so confusing).
Anyway, if you have a "logo.sys" file, rename it "logo0.sys" (to save it) and put your (or my) "logo.sys" in the root directory.
If you don't find a "logo.sys" file, just put your (or my) "logo.sys" in the root directory.
Yer dun!

Oh, by the way, the graphics on this page are .gif format. If you download one of them, you'll need to convert it to .bmp format before you rename it to .sys.

This is the opening file--logo.sys

This is the first closing file--logow.sys

This is the second closing file--logos.sys

OK, here's why you're here...the zip file (That is why you're here, isn't it?). For those who can unzip a .zip file, you can click here to download "win_logo.zip"(220 KB).
For those who don't have an unzipper, you can download a slightly larger, self-extracting file here(236 KB). Then you should go here to get a free unzipper. You'll need it in your Web travels.
There is a text copy of this file included in both.

* Does anyone know how to spell this? One of the Hanna-Barbara characters said it.
